Advanced Stone-setting

This 3-part intensive class will expand your technical skills while encouraging creative approaches to setting gemstones. Learn advanced methods of bezel setting, tube-bezels, step bezels and open back bezels, plus prong setting of round, oval, square, emerald, triangular, and faceted stone shapes. Tips on finishing, customization, and working with odd-shaped and pointy stones will also be covered. The flow and overall structure of each session will be responsive to students interests and questions.

Learning how to set gemstones into metal jewelry is an essential skill of becoming a jeweler. The bezel setting is the most foundational of settings. Bezels are thin strips of metal that completely encircle a stone to hold it in place. Learn the principles of setting cabochon gemstones into various jewelry pieces as you create a bezel set ring, pendant, or a pair of earrings. Skills including measuring, fitting, soldering, setting, and finishing will be taught.
Prerequisite: Students must have basic soldering experience to take this course. Our Welcome to the Studio class series offers this introduction, and helps you create jewelry on which gemstones can be set though this class. Keumboo
Saturday, April 4, 2026 | 10A - 4P | One-day workshop | $175
Keumboo is an ancient Korean art of applying thin gold sheet or gold fill onto silver and fusing the gold to silver. It is a way of adding color and gold at a lower cost to silver than to use gold sheet and yet it adds to the value of jewelry. We will be using pure 24kt gold foil and bonding it onto silver sheet, using a hotplate and burnishers to press the gold into the silver using heat and pressure.

Spend a day making your own fabulous earrings! Using wire and simple hand tools, you’ll learn how to create French ear wires, dangles, hoops, and more. Earring making is wonderfully accessible and relies on just a few tools and a dash of imagination. We’ll work with wire, a small amount of sheet metal, and beads as you build skills and confidence in designing and fabricating earrings.
This class is ideal for beginners as well as for those looking to refine their ear wire–making techniques. Silver-plated, sterling silver, and copper wire will be provided.

Learning how to set gemstones into metal jewelry is an essential skill of becoming a jeweler. The bezel setting is the most foundational of settings. Bezels are thin strips of metal that completely encircle a stone to hold it in place. Learn the principles of setting cabochon gemstones into various jewelry pieces as you create a bezel set ring, pendant, or a pair of earrings. Skills including measuring, fitting, soldering, setting, and finishing will be taught.
Prerequisite: Students must have basic soldering experience to take this course. Our Welcome to the Studio class series offers this introduction, and helps you create jewelry on which gemstones can be set though this class. Prior experience with one of these Welcome to the Studio classes or equivalent is required.

This 3-part intensive class will expand your technical skills while encouraging creative approaches to setting gemstones. Advanced Stone-setting
Saturdays, January 17 - February 7, and February 28, 2026 | 10A - 4P | 3 sessions | $350
This 3-part intensive class will expand your technical skills while encouraging creative approaches to setting gemstones. Learn advanced methods of bezel setting including tube-bezels, step bezels, and open back bezels, plus prong setting of round, oval, square, emerald, triangular, and faceted stone shapes. Tips on finishing, customization, and working with odd-shaped and pointy stones will also be covered. The flow and overall structure of each session will be responsive to students interests and questions.
Prior experience with one of these Welcome to the Studio classes, or the equivalent is required.
Supplies: Supplies may be purchased through the Studio Shop, with specialized materials provided by and payable to the instructor.

Learn basic metalsmithing skills and jewelry making techniques in this hands-on introductory class. Get to know the studio and become familiar with the tools, equipment, and unique community resources to help you grow as a metalsmith. Through the creation of a set of rings, students will learn the foundational techniques of metal work including sizing, soldering, shaping, surface decoration, and finishing.

Explore your style using sheet metal, wire, beads, found objects, with the tools and equipment of our Jewelry Studio to create custom jewelry. Topics covered will vary based on interest, from soldered rings to sawn pendants, to forged and patterned earrings and so much more! Designed for kids in grades 5 - 8.
