Make you own 5 panel baseball cap from start to finish in one workshop! Learn about which fabrics are best for making a sturdy, long lasting hat. Discuss and practice proper techniques for cutting, sewing, and assembling a well finished a hat that looks great both inside and out. Each student will select their own fabric, create a pattern that can be tailored to their head size, cut out and sew their own unique hat. Additional topics include: choice of materials for the inside of hat brims, interfacing, hat closures, and more. If you have ever wanted to try to make your own headwear, then this is the class for you!

Prerequisite: Basic machine sewing skills/ knowledge required.

Pour molten silver over straw brooms, rock salt, lentils, and more! The metal casts the negative space of whatever you're pouring over, resulting in one of a kind organic-shaped pieces to use in your work. The process is immensely fun because you never know what you'll get from each pour! And it's immensely economical as well, since it recycles your silver scrap metal and any results you don't like can always be melted again.

Beginners welcome. Experienced broom-casters can use our setup for a work day.

Home Grown & Gathered: Natural Dyes

Natural dyeing is an ancient practice of infusing textiles with plant-based pigment, with interesting historical methods found in all parts of the world. Our local ecosystem includes a number of dye plants, some cultivated in and some growing wild, including a few invasive species. In this class we'll dye wool yarn and cotton fabric with plants found in local gardens, weedy patches, forests, and fields, and discuss effective techniques for working with them to give beautiful color to your textile projects. We'll also talk about how to identify wild plants, the ethics of harvesting from the wild, suggestions for growing your own dye plants, and the cultural and historical significance of some of the plants we'll be working with.

If you would like to bring some personal fiber or fabric to dye, please get in touch with Emma ahead of time (emmapercy@proton.me) to ensure it is prepared correctly ahead of time for dyeing!

Learn the bookbinding basics as you create a watercolor journal using the Coptic stitch, perfect for recording your naturalist observations. we’ll also create a travel tray for transporting watercolors.

With journals and watercolors in hand, we’ll take a short drive to Hurricane Hill to birdwatch and draft our first observations. We’ll discuss birds, their habitat, and ways to support birds in your own yard. In addition to discussing native Vermont birds, we’ll practice identifying birds using tools like Merlin ID and traditional bird identification books.

Explore various ways to add pattern and color to your metal using copper, brass, bronze, nickel, and silver. Learn mock inlay, soldering wire or sheet to heavy sheet metal and rolling it through a rolling mill, and solder inlay, filling dents in sheet metal with gold or silver solder to create a dot effect or add another color. Solder twisted wire together and roll it out to get a lovely wood grain pattern, and more!

Intro to Garment Design (SOLD OUT)

This beginner sewing class starts with and introduction to the sewing machine and ends with the completion of a cross-back apron or box top.  Either option makes a great first project to start your journey into garment sewing.  Learn the most frequently used sewing techniques to become an independent maker.

Supplies: Bring your sewing machine (plus its feet and manual) or use one of the studio's sewing machines.

We will review material requirements at the first class. Choose from a variety of fabrics from our collection, or bring your own to personalize your project.

Bezel Set Enamel Rings (2 SPOTS LEFT!)

Learn basic enameling and silversmithing both in this one-day workshop! Beginner enamelists will learn to sift enamel on copper and fire it in the kiln to create dynamic pieces, which can be used as a cabochon to set in silver. Those with some enameling experience can receive guidance on cloisonné or other more advanced techniques. The price of one ring is included in the workshop.
