Letterpress Exploration
Tuesdays, April 29 - May 27, 2025 | 6 - 8P | 5 sessions | $275
This class is designed for those who want to explore letterpress printing a little further, have several projects in mind, or want to design something with multiple colors and layers. (Beginners are also welcome!) We’ll meet for five Tuesdays, and class takers should plan to complete between 2 and 4 projects over the five weeks, depending on the complexity of their design. You’ll have full access to Scale House Print Shop’s collection of wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations, and you’re welcome to bring your own linocut illustrations to print, as well. Printing will be done on a 12 by 18 Chandler & Price press manufactured in 1913 and a 7 by 11 Golding Pearl from 1892. Those who complete this class will be eligible to rent supervised studio space at SHPS in the future.

Letterpress Cards
Saturday, May 17, 2025 | 10A - 2:30P | One-day workshop | $150
Nothing says “I love you!” like a handmade card, and nothings says handmade better than letterpress! Using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and illustrations, you’ll design a single-color card and print it on a printing press that started its working life in 1892.
At the end of the day, you’ll take home 25 handmade cards (plus envelopes)--enough for any mom, dad, or grad you want to celebrate! Class takers should come with an idea of a short phrase (no more than 10 words) that they’d like to use in their card design, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.

Letterpress Posters

Learn the magic of combining type, paper, and ink at this Saturday letterpress workshop. You’ll learn the basics of the history of printing, how to set type, and how to print your design on a press that has been in use since 1911 as you create a letterpress print in up to two colors using antique wood and metal type, ornaments, and hand-carved illustrations.
The 20 prints you’ll take home will show the signature letterpress impression that only type can make! Class takers should come with a quote, lyric, or other phrase they want to print in mind, and wear clothes that they don’t mind getting a little inky.
